Proudly representing the Tasmanian seed production industry

TSIG is the peak industry body representing Tasmania’s seed production industry, uniting seed producers, agronomists, seed companies, labs, government partners, and researchers to sustainably drive local industry growth and innovation.

Seeds are essential for food, animal feed, fibre, and medicine. TSIG members produce these seeds!

Successful crop and pasture production starts with the seed. Seed production - producing seed specifically for the purpose of resowing - is a growing industry in Tasmania and the pasture and vegetable seed components of the industry alone had an estimated farm gate value exceeding $48 million.

The Tasmanian seed industry has grown more than four-fold during the past 10-years and the area under production has grown by about 80%. We grow vegetable seed including onions, beets and carrots and pasture seeds including ryegrass, chicory and clover. Many of the varieties (‘cultivars’) our industry produces underpin the broader Australian crop and pasture-based livestock industries.

Tasmania stands out internationally for its certified seed production, which relies on evidence and field inspections to guarantee each seed variety's genetic identity and purity. By choosing certified seed, farmers benefit from a dependable supply of high-quality seeds essential for cultivating crops vital to our existence. Uncertified seed is also produced in the state.

Tasmania's advantageous climate, land suitability, irrigation capacity, and relative freedom from many pests and diseases have established the region as a dependable location for seed production, with considerable potential for further expansion.
